The boutique city of Dunedin is a fantastic spot for a relaxing holiday. Given that the city itself is set in and around a volcanic crater, it’s wonderfully unique and beautiful too. From the many bushland walks to the rolling hills and stunning coastal areas, you’ll have a terrific time exploring the city in your Hertz rental car.
This trip will be full of culture, history, and adventure. As the city itself overlooks the Pacific ocean, you can expect wondrous views from any vantage point you stumble across. Remember to always pack an extra jumper, as Dunedin is one of the southernmost points of the New Zealand South Island, and with this comes cooler temperatures than other cities up north. With snow in the winter and beautiful sunny days in the summer, it’s a great place for a trip!
Dunedin and More, with Hertz
There are plenty of adventures in and around Dunedin central.
As the wildlife capital of New Zealand, Dunedin is home to some incredible animals. We recommend putting on your favourite playlist, grabbing some road trip snacks and heading straight to the Otago Peninsula for some wildlife spotting. It’s just a 25-minute drive to the start of the Peninsula, but you’ll be cruising around the local towns of Portobello, Anderson’s Bay, and more as you try to spot the penguins, albatross, and seal colonies.
Why not head on one of the many hikes that this city is famed for? For those looking for some beautiful scenery, try the Tunnel Beach Walk, where you can quietly enjoy the views with your road trip buddy. There’s also the challenging Frasers Gully Bush Walk or the Ross Creek Walk, each beautiful in their own way.
For those wishing for a longer road trip, then it’s time to pack up the car and head on a 3.5-hour drive to Queenstown. On this trip, you’ll be driving from the wildlife capital of New Zealand to the adrenaline capital. Choose from one of the many thrilling activities here, like bungee jumping, skydiving, white water rafting, or simply enjoy the views over Lake Wakatipu with a Fergburger (a burger from Queenstown’s most renowned eatery). The choice is yours!

There is so much history and culture to uncover while you’re here in Dunedin. The city itself is one of the three founding cities in New Zealand, so take a moment to appreciate the Edwardian and Victorian architecture as you drive around. Dunedin has some of the best architectural representations of these eras in the Southern Hemisphere, so if you appreciate a beautiful building this will definitely be the city for you.
Dunedin is also an incredibly creative city. It’s the only UNESCO Creative City of Literature in New Zealand, and is the home of many literary heroes. You can learn more about this on the Dunedin Writers Walk. If you’re in an inquisitive mood, then perhaps after the walk, head to the Toitu Otago Early Settlers Museum and the Otago Museum to learn more about this special city.
It’s true that Dunedin is a magical place. We can’t wait to welcome you here soon, at Dunedin Central Hertz.
