Greymouth is an aptly named town situated at the mouth of a grey river. It’s a place that on first appearances can feel a little dull with its strip of motels and industrial buildings that don’t exactly exude charm. If you happen to visit in winter,Greymouth can feel even greyer as prevailing winds hit the town, bringing with them an unforgiving chill that’s enough to make anyone miserable.
In the warmer months of summer, however, things take a turn for the better, with many travellers arriving in town onboard the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch. If you have the time, the TranzAlpine is one of the iconic train journeys of the world, crossing mountains, viaducts and valleys, offering breathtaking views along the way.
West Coast Adventures
If you’re not taking the epic train journey, there’s still plenty to see around the area. Greymouth is the perfect base from which you can further explore the west coast and enjoy an adventure holiday in New Zealand. The area is close to mountains, rivers, caves and native forests for hiking, rafting, mountain biking and canyoning. There’s also some magnificent beaches for swimming and relaxing in the warmer months.
Explore the History and Heritage of Greymouth
Greymouth is home to some small galleries, as well as some historical sites and heritage attractions that are worth exploring. Take time to visit Monteith’s, one of New Zealand’s best loved breweries.
Take one of their thoroughly enjoyable tours, which starts in the Beertopia Room that houses the Monteith's Museum. Here you'll learn about the heritage and history of Monteith's, which all began in 1868 in Greymouth, right on the edge of the west coast.
From the museum section, visitors then move into the brewery to see, touch, taste and smell the New Zealand grown ingredients that go into brewing Monteith's range of craft beers in the state-of-the-art, modern brewery.
Take your time to walk through the brew house and packaging centre as your expert guide talks you through the process involved in crafting the 150 year old beer recipes, as well as the more modern additions. Monteith’s is also a great spot to unwind and grab a bite to eat.
Go Back in Time
For a dip into the history of the region, pay a visit to Shantytown Heritage Park. Shantytown lies 10km south of Greymouth and was established by locals in the early 1970s in an effort to preserve the west coast’s gold-mining ties. Today, it’s home to a faithful recreation of a functioning 19th-century mining town, and a great day out for people of all ages. Whether you’re taking a ride on the steam train, panning for gold, or snacking on some of the traditional lollies sold there, there’s something for everyone.
Whether you’re heading on the TranzAlpine or not, Greymouth is the perfect place to stop on any west coast road trip in New Zealand.
