Nelson – NewZealand’s second oldest settled city – is famous for its enviable weather, vibrant arts community, as well as its food and wine scene. In summer, the town swells with tourists who flock here to enjoy everything the town and its surrounds has to offer.
Situated in an area of immense natural beauty, Nelson’s diverse landscape includes everything from golden beaches and turquoise waters, to pristine forests and rugged mountains.
Although Nelson is a small town, there is no shortage of things to do, or places to eat, drink and relax. With so much to see and do in the region, the best way to get around and see the sights is with a rental car.
Bask in sunshine on beautiful beaches
In New Zealand’s sunniest city, visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches. Tahunanui Beach offers white sands and gentle waves, which makes it popular with Kiwi families on summer holidays. The beach is safe for swimming and also attracts walkers, joggers, sun-seekers and dog owners.
Other beaches in the area include Cable Bay and The Glen, which are two of the more beautiful and dramatic in the region. Both beaches are linked by a pretty 5.5km walkway. Just under half an hour in a rental car from Nelson is Rabbit Island – a gorgeous public beach and a great place for an afternoon picnic.
Take to The Abel Tasman Track
For those of a more adventurous disposition, head for the Abel Tasman Track. With guided and unguided treks available, you can walk for anywhere between three to five days. The scenery and the wildlife here are nothing short of spectacular.
Cycle The Great Taste Trail
The Great Taste Trail is so called because of the incredible array of experiences available along the trail. Along the way, visitors can visit the region’s towns, cycle past orchards and vineyards, take in stretches of sparkling coastline, and traverse rivers and valleys.
The trail also takes visitors along the edge of an internationally significant coastal estuary, which is home to a number of rare bird species. The estuary continues meandering along towards Rabbit Island’s beachfront, where visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the coast, as well as the mountains and Tasman Bay.
Wander through world-class wineries
No trip to any region of New Zealand would be complete without a visit to one of the country’s many world-class wineries. And when it comes to wine, Nelson is no exception. The area is home to numerous boutique wineries producing exquisite varieties. Pick a designated driver – jump in a rental car – then, journey out into the countryside where you can explore boutique cellar doors at your leisure, before stopping off for lunch in the sun. The Nelson region is home to a thriving artisan community and when driving around you’ll come across all manner of craftspeople, art studios, and exhibitions. And all framed by the picturesque hills and stunning views of the Nelson countryside.
New Zealand’s Nelson region has everything a traveller could want, from crystal-clear freshwater springs, to golden, sandy beaches and more award-winning wineries and world-class views than nearly anywhere else on earth. For the best way to see it all, jump in a rental car and hit the road.
Wherever you want to go, you’ll get there in a rental car from Hertz.
