Picton Ferry Terminal

Picton Ferry Terminal, tucked away in Queen Charlotte Sound, is one of the most enchanting ways of arriving in New Zealand’s South Island. The seafront is a wonderful place to while away a few hours while waiting for your ferry – or before you continue on your journey into the South Island.

But Picton is also one of New Zealand’s most important transport hubs. Ferries link it to Wellington in the North Island. The country’s principal freeway, State Highway 1, and the Main North railway line, which carries the Coastal Pacific passenger service and freight trains – terminate here. And yet it still manages to be an attractive seaside town.

Cool cafes are scattered amongst galleries and museums. Pretty much next door to Hertz is the Edwin Fox Museum, built around the remains of the ninth oldest ship in the world. Learn about this fascinating vessel, which transported convicts to Australia and immigrants to New Zealand. The Picton Heritage and Whaling Museum is also worth a visit.

Picton is blessed with some excellent cafes for pre- or post-ferry feeds. Picton Village Bakkerij does wonderful pies and pastries, Gusto serves up excellent breakfasts and amazing coffees, and Cortado is another great option.

Picton lies in Queen Charlotte Sound, part of the Marlborough Sounds, a series of river valleys drowned by the sea following the last Ice Age. The Sounds are famous for their crystal clear and calm waters, which are perfect for sailing and diving. They’re also very isolated in parts and exploring them can be a real joy. Hop on a mail boat to discover unspoilt coves and access secluded accommodation.

Alternatively take on the 70km-long Queen Charlotte Track – open to hikers or cyclists – for amazing views of this unique landscape.
