Where the City Meets the Sea

Step off the plane and you’ll be met with stunning views, a relaxed atmosphere, and a sparkling harbour.Tauranga, meaning ‘the place of rest or anchorage’ is a 2.5-hour drive south of Auckland in the Bay of Plenty.

With a variety of bars, restaurants, cafes, and harbourside activities, head straight from the airport to the enjoy the lights of the city and striking views. To top it off, Tauranga boasts a variety of natural wonders in the region. Whether its food, getting out in nature, or experiencing the art and culture of Tauranga, you won’t be disappointed.

Must-Do:

The region is known as a large port city, but more importantly known for their wildlife encounters with humpback whales, dolphins, orcas, seals, and an abundance of marine life. For a more personal experience, take a cruise across the water or swim with dolphins at one of the local companies.

Keep an eye out for large-scale works by the internationally renowned street artist Owen Dippie, a local resident of Tauranga. Tauranga is also coloured by ‘Greerton’s yarn bombing craze’, and as a result many local trees, bollards and street signs are encased by knitted decorations. To further explore the local art scene head to the Tauranga Art Gallery, which features both international and local exhibitions. Entry is free, and the artwork and exhibitions change each month.

For a charming glimpse of yesteryear explore Tauranga’s historic 17th avenue. There you’ll discover local businesses operating from a village of wooden buildings and cobbled streets, a rare sight in New Zealand.

Into your art? Come from the airport and immerse yourself in the spray-painted art and impressive murals dotting the city. Explore car parks and buildings around Sprint Street, Grey Street Service Lane, 53 the Strand, or Cameron Road and Dive Crescent for instant inspiration.

Markets are aplenty. Hit up one of the markets in Tauranga or the nearby Mt Maunganui. A few to explore include Little Big Markets in Coronation park, Farmers Market in Phoenix Car Park, or the Tauranga Farmers Market. Stock up on local produce and the best bargains around.

Natural Wonders:

Tauranga is the perfect place to explore the region’s natural wonders. Take a short drive to explore ‘The Mount’ (a.k.a. Mt Maunganui), a dormant volcano with stunning 360-degree views at the top and salt-water hot pools at the bottom. Hike up the mountain and soak up the views. Tauranga is also a short drive from three beautiful waterfalls: McLaren Falls, Omanawa Falls and Kaiate Falls. Hiring a car allows you to freely move from site-to-site as you please.

Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park is another location full of history and trekking trails to discover in the midst of old mine and logging sites. Or, if you’re feeling keen for an island excursion, walk across the footbridge that connects Moturiki Island to Mt Maunganui’s main beach. If you prefer longer expeditions, go on a tour for 5-6 hours to explore NZ’s only active marine volcano on White Island (Whakaari).

Challenge yourself at Okere Falls and weave through the white-water rapids, dive into an adventure walk with a focus on Maori culture at the Guided Footprints Mt Drury Walk, try your hand at fly fishing in a salt water environment, or take a kayak out in the evening to a canyon where clusters of glow-worms call home. There are endless outdoor activities for all interests and fitness levels in Tauranga.

Delicious Distractions:

There are quite a few venues that Tauranga have bragging rights to. They don’t call it “Bay of Plenty” for nothing. With a car you can hit all of these places on your weekend/week away. A few of the best spots in the city include:

  • Copenhagen Cone ice cream (you won’t regret this)
  • Bobby’s Fresh Fish Market for a classic fish and chips
  • Nautilus’s waterfront buffet is a sumptuous banquet of offerings
  • Imbibe – a family friendly eatery for those with budget at top of mind
  • The Pizza Library Co has live music, magicians, eccentric décor, cinema-like seats, and epic pizza
  • Mills Reef Winery has find dining and expert wine matching, plus a lavish brunch menu
