When travelling in New Zealand, many people bypass Timaru, while others think of it as a handy halfway point between Christchurch and Dunedin. There’s much more to Timaru, however. This little port city is a gem of a town, with plenty for visitors to enjoy, from pristine Edwardian architecture, to excellent dining and shopping. There’s more than enough here to demand a day, or a long afternoon, at the very least.
The name Timaru comes from the Māori name Te Maru, meaning ‘place of shelter’. Some of the first Europeans to settle here were the Weller brothers who arrived in 1839 and set up a whaling station.
The South Canterbury Museum
When visiting Timaru, make time to visit this interesting little museum that focuses on the natural heritage and history of the South Canterbury region. Here you’ll find exhibits and interesting artefacts that tell the story of the region’s nature, history and culture.
Watch Penguins Returning
If you’re in town before the sun goes down, head for Caroline Bay where you can watch little blue penguins return to their burrows for their evening slumber. Timaru is one of the best places in New Zealand for watching penguins because street lights make it easy for people to spot them. You can watch the penguins from a vantage point at Marine Parade. Visitors are asked to stay behind the fenced off area. Please note that flash photography and torches or lights of any kind are strictly prohibited, as they spook the penguins.
Visit Aigantighe Art Gallery
When in town, Aigantighe Art Gallery is a charming place to spend an afternoon. The name Aigantighe has its origins in Gaelic and is pronounced like “egg-and-tie”, which means at home, or at the house. The mansion that houses the gallery was built in 1908 and is now one of the South Island’s largest public galleries. It’s home to a fine collection of art from New Zealand and further afield. There’s also a magnificent sculpture garden that can be explored.
Timaru Farmers Market
If you’re in Timaru on a Saturday morning, make sure to stop by the local farmers market. It’s a great opportunity to pick up some stunning local produce and take it with you for your onward journey. You’ll also get the chance to meet some of the local farmers and producers and enjoy the famous Kiwi hospitality. It’s also a great place to buy gifts for loved ones, or even to simply to pick up supplies for a picnic on your road trip. There’s all sorts of fabulous preserves, cheeses, baked goods and organic goodies.
