There’s a lot more to Liverpool than pop music and football, and hiring a car gives you the freedom to easily explore its plentiful and varied attractions, as well as accessing the region’s other main cities.
Pop art
After an impressive renovation, the Albert Dock has become one of the city’s most visited attractions. A mix of galleries, museums, restaurants and shops, it’s a popular place to get a real feel for the city.
The main event here is Tate Liverpool, which has become one of the largest and most significant galleries of modern and contemporary art in the UK outside of London.
It’s at the Albert Dock, that you’ll also find The Beatles Story museum, taking you on an atmospheric journey through the lives, times and music of the Fab Four. Exhibits and unique memorabilia chart their progress from their Liverpool childhood, through the early days of the band, to world domination and on to their solo careers.
City of culture
One of the giants of Liverpool's cultural landscape is the Walker Gallery, boasting an impressive collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative art spanning 700 years to the present day.
It’s one of Liverpool's best attractions and a great place to while away an afternoon in the company of masterpieces. It features 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art and a stunning sculpture room among many other great works.
A short drive north of the city, on Crosby beach, stands Antony Gormley’s ‘Another Place’, an army of 100 human figures staring out across the Mersey estuary. Enjoy a poignant experience, particularly impressive at low tide when each of the figures slowly emerges from the Mersey.
Religious following
Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral is the largest in Britain and the fifth largest in Europe. This world-class visitor attraction is free to enter, but it’s well worth booking a ticket for the amazing Tower Experience.
You can visit the Bell Chamber, watch a film on how this incredible structure was built and enjoy unrivalled panoramic views of the city with a trip up the tower.
No visit to Liverpool would be complete without a pilgrimage to explore its other religion – football. A visit to Anfield, the iconic home of Liverpool Football Club, is a must for all lovers of the beautiful game.
Liverpool FC have claimed Europe’s top club title more times than any other British club and a tour of the hallowed stadium gives a fascinating insight into the history of one of the game’s legendary teams. Better still, attend one of their home games, where you can experience the deafening atmosphere of the Kop in full swing.
A walk through history
Take a trip to Chester, one of English history's greatest sights. This unique collection of Tudor- and Victorian-era buildings, encircled by a Roman-built wall, is only 40 minutes south of Liverpool city centre.
Originally built by the Romans around AD 70, the city walls are best appreciated by walking along their two-mile circuit that takes you around the historic centre.
Afterwards, head for the famous Rows, a series of Victorian and Tudor two-level galleried arcades that house a fantastic collection of independently-owned shops.
Car rental in Liverpool is a great way to make the most of your trip – exploring the must-see sights in the city and also venturing further afield to check out the many attractions that are within easy reach.
