Now in its fourth year, the the Christchurch | South Island Wine & Food Festival is a bright spot on the local culinary calendar. Expect to see over 40 wineries from across the five South Island wine regions – some of the best in the world for winemaking – presenting their products, with top local chefs plating up their best dishes to match. Artisan food producers and local food vendors will also be out in force. All of this – set to a lively background atmosphere on the day provided by great Kiwi music acts.
On top of that, you can look out for wine seminars and cooking masterclasses with celebrity chefs and restaurateurs throughout the day. For true blue foodies, this is an awesome chance to learn first hand from some of the masters of the trade and take home new skills to impress your family and friends. They include Jax Hamilton of MasterChef fame, My Kitchen Rules judgeNadia Lim, and Michael Meredith of Merediths in Auckland. Local representatives include Christchurch chefs Gary Miller, a fixture in the New Zealand and Pacific Rim community, and classically French-trained Simon Levy – head chef at Harlequin Public House and the new venture from Jonny Schwass – Mrs Hucks. Also on the schedule is Marc Soper, the Executive Chef at the exclusive Wharekauhau Country Lodge in the Wairarapa and a self-confessed food-forager with a passion for the freshest produce.
Wine sales will be available both by the tasting pour, or by the glass ($5-7 approximately) on the day. Festival glasses will be issued on entry to ticket holders over 18 (unless you’re a designated driver, of course). Bottles of wine will also be available for purchase, but only to take home – not for consumption.
The best entrance to the Wine & Food Festival will be via Park Terrace/Rolleston Avenue. If you’ve got a Christchurch car hire, the good news is that parking will be available all day for just $3, with the car park entrance off Harper Ave. Spring into summer – tickets on sale now or possibly at the gate on the day if available.
