Outdoor activities for the adventurous in Auckland banner

Got a hankering for something that’ll get your pulse up and give you the chance to see Auckland from a different viewpoint? There’s plenty to do for the adventurous types. Pick up a Hertz car rental at Auckland Airport then head to one of these spots for a new outdoors experience.

4 Track Adventures

4 Track Adventures, New Zealand’s original 4 wheel motorbike safari tour, lets you roam through wild West Coast surf beaches and forests on your own quad. All bike safaris are guided so you don’t get lost, and no experience is needed as full guidance is given. Just come with an open mind and the willingness to leave the city behind.

Horse riding at Pakiri

Through beach, bush and farmland from 1 hour to 7 days, you can experience coast to coast rides on horses to suit all rider abilities. The pristine white Pakiri sand is set among farmland and native forest and surf beaches with views to the islands beyond. Knowledgeable guides make the experience an informed and memorable one. Accommodation and a cafe mean you don’t need to rush straight back to the city.

Pakiri Beach Horse Rides is just 90 minutes from downtown Auckland and less than two hours from Auckland airport. Hertz’s Auckland car hire options have you covered no matter where you prefer to pick up your vehicle.

Inflite Charters

Strategically located at Mechanics Bay in Auckland’s CBD, Inflite Charters is the only downtown helicopter operator offering scenic flights starting at $149 a person. Flights range from 10 minutes to half an hour, in which you’ll get to take in the stunning views of Auckland’s inner harbour, Westhaven Marina, the Viaduct, Sky Tower, Mission Bay and views out to the Hauraki Gulf, including extinct volcano Rangitoto Island.

Hotel pick ups are available within the CBD or there’s free parking available if you bring your own car.

Auckland Bridge Climb/Bungy

The only way to experience the Auckland Harbour Bridge by foot is to book a tour. Brought to you by AJ Hackett Bungy – the original bungy experts – you’ll climb under, around, up and over this iconic city landmark on a 1.5 hour personally guided tour. And you can relax knowing the custom engineered walkways are safe as houses.

From the top you’ll enjoy 360 degree views. For the brave, there’s also the option of taking a leap off the jump pod, a 10 minute walk out. Tandem jumps can be done too. From $120 per adult.

Rocket Ropes

Rocket Ropes is a new adrenaline-fuelled addition to south Auckland and features 2 towers with 4 height levels. The Croc and Rocket high rope climbing courses have more than 50 intense challenging activities, plus you won’t want to miss either the Giant Sky Swing or the Long Drop.

It’s open on weekends, and during the week by appointment. Entry from $14 for adults. Just two minutes from the airport with free parking, it’s a great first stop after picking up your Auckland Airport car hire.

Quad biking

For a real thrill, experience another side of Auckland with Awesome Off Roading 4×4 Adventure in Waiuku.

The setting, high up in the cliffs overlooking Karioitahi Beach looking out to the Tasman Sea, the off road course winds its way through the rugged hillside. All trucks are fully automatic and easy to drive, with training given. You’ll never be forced to go beyond your comfort level. From $95.

It will take you about an hour to reach by car from Auckland airport car hire location, with plenty of parking onsite.
