Spend a day doing your Christmas shopping around the town centre, made easier with late night hours until 7pm. Plus there’s the all-day street market with more than 5o stalls selling gifts, cider, burgers and more, with a giant slide, ferris wheel and assorted rides to keep the kids entertained. Meanwhile, the Christmas Craft Fair in the Christchurch Priory showcases handmade gifts by local artists, from glass art to jewellery, photography, prints, bags, pottery, leather, knitwear and more. Once you’ve ticked the shopping off your to-do list, reward yourself with a leisurely sit-down dinner and a bottle of local wine.

The longest established fete in New Zealand will be held in the gardens of Wynyard, a working farm, 12km from Culverden, North Canterbury. 200-plus stalls will be set up among the trees, blasting music, showing demonstrations, selling fresh local food and wine, as well as nifty gifts and knick-knacks. Don’t miss the Pimm’s tent, and remember, cash only at the gate on the day (entry $20). Undoubtedly one of the biggest events on the Christchurch calendar, the Santa Parade takes place on Riccarton Rd. Presented by the Christchurch Children’s Christmas Parade Trust, the parade has lined the streets for 65 years with crowds clamouring for a view of the colourful floats, bands, animals, clowns, and of course, Santa himself. A free day out for the whole family.
