Christchurch, in the heart of Canterbury, is a prime visitor destination all year round. Spring is a beautiful time of year to pay a visit and it’s easy to get around with a Christchurch Airport car hire. Here are some upcoming events worthy of your attention.
25 October - Horncastle Arena
Held in Christchurch since 2010, Diwali – the festival of lights – attracts tens of thousands of attendees, being the biggest event put on by the South Island Indian community. Local and international stage performers provide entertainment throughout the day and food stalls offer plenty to sample and nibble on. Cultural demonstrations, crafts and other activities offer a chance to learn more about the culture as the arena is turned into an honorary Little India for the day.
30 October - Lowry Peaks Rd, Culverden
For the 23rd year, the Christmas Country Fete promises to draw guests from around the country and beyond. It is New Zealand’s biggest and most popular fete, with more than 200 stalls. It’s a chance to purchase items for Christmas gift ahead of time that you just won’t see anywhere else – both classics and new and cutting edge. Food and wine stall, live entertainment and demonstrations will keep everyone occupied amidst the park like setting of the ‘Wynyard’ farm. Admission includes free car parking.
New Zealand Cup and Show Week includes events at three venues; Riccarton Park Racecourse, Addington Raceway and Canterbury Agricultural Park. It’s about a lot more than just racing: it’s about agriculture, fashion and entertainment. There will be best dressed competitions at a number of race day events including the glamorous Fashion in the Fields contest at Riccarton Park Racecourse on the very last day. In addition there will be retail, entertainment and dining options around the city during the festival. Other related events include Fashion for a Cure – a runway show on behalf of Breast Cancer Cure – and the Canterbury A&P Association’s annual show. New Zealand Cup and Show Week is a must do for anyone keen to enjoy all that Christchurch and the Canterbury region has to offer.
