What’s On in Wellington – Summer City 2015 byHertz NZ

What’s On in Wellington – Summer City 2015 banner

Wellington is a city that takes summer seriously. Every year, the Summer City festival kicks off at New Year and runs over 3 whole months from January to March, with over 100 free events on the roster.

Summer City has been run by Wellington City Council for 33 years now, encompassing music, sports, cultural and community events along the waterfront, in the city and in public spaces like gardens, parks and reserves. That includes a number of outdoor movie screenings and many festivals! If you’re planning a trip during this time, here are some of the Summer City highlights to take note of – and don’t forget to book your Hertz Wellington car hire too.

New Year’s Eve 2014/2015

Frank Kitts Park, Jervois Quay, Wednesday 31 December 2014 8pm

Celebrate New Year’s Eve on the waterfront with live music from Orchestra Wellington and screenings of local film clips. The evening starts with free family entertainment, and wraps with a midnight fireworks display.

Birdman

Wellington Waterfront, Monday 19 January 2015 11am

This annual event includes a wacky contest to see who can make the most creative attempt at “flying” into the harbour off the wharf. Prize categories include recycling, whales, and creative costume. In addition there is a market, children’s activities, music stages and food stalls.

Chinese New Year Festival

Frank Kitts Park, Jervois Quay, Saturday 14 February 7pm and Sunday 15 February 10:30am

Celebrate the dawn of the Chinese new year. The year of the sheep kicks off with food and festivities in spades – including dance, fashion, a street parade and markets.

Island Bay Festival: Parade and Variety Show

Shorland Park, Reef St, Island Bay, Saturday 14 February 2:30pm – 6pm

This parade features local community groups, floats, vintage cars and performers, travelling from Avon Street to Shorland Park. Bring a picnic and relax on the grass as you watch the variety show afterwards. Food stalls will also be open.

Wellington Pasifika Festival

Waitangi Park, 107 Cable St, Saturday 17 January 12pm – 6pm

This annual festival celebrates the tastes, sights and sounds of the Pacific, attracting thousands every year. Take in the crafts, cultural performances and cuisine over the course of the afternoon.
