Milan is Italy’s capital of cool, an effortlessly stylish city filled with fashion, art, design and gastronomic delights.
But as well as being the birthplace of some of the world’s most iconic fashion houses, Milan is also home to some of history’s most important works of art and architecture.
City sightseeing
The jewel in the city’s architectural crown is the Duomo. Adorned with more than 130 spires and 3,400 statues, this imposing structure is a Milan must-see.
Built over 600 years ago in pink Candoglia marble, be sure to check out the museum and organ housed inside. Alternatively, head to the terraces on top of the cathedral itself for spectacular views stretching across the city.
For something truly special, pay a visit to Santa Maria delle Grazie – the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting. Created between 1495 and 1498, you’ll need to book a tour to get a glimpse of this legendary work.
The extravagant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a perfect fit for fashionistas and history lovers alike. The arcade houses some of the city’s most elegant stores, from Prada to world-famous hat-maker Borsalino. Even if you’re not buying, the window-shopping and people-watching alone are worth the visit.
Divine dining
Eating out is one of the real delights of the Lombardy region, and Milan is no stranger to extraordinary food. For a taste sensation, visit the Michelin-starred Alice Ristorante for Mediterranean-inspired fish and meat dishes prepared to perfection.
Sampled the marinated mackerel, with grilled escarole, or an exquisite lemon flan that’s made to order. Other culinary highlights include Spontini Milanese Pizza, serving delicious slices of true Italian pizza and Asola with its gourmet Sunday brunch.
The majesty of the Italian Lakes
If you want to swap the buzz of the city for a more serene setting, jump in your hire car and head across to the Italian Lakes. Each has its own unique character and allure.
Lake Maggiore, just over an hour and a half away along the A8, has a certain grandeur that other lakes find hard to match, while Lake Orta, just down from Lake Maggiore, is arguably the most enchanting. Surrounded by hills and forests, it makes for a fun day out, plus the petite and pretty island of Isola di San Giulio is just a short boat ride away.
Neighbouring Lake Como is the region’s most glamorous lake. Surrounded by mountains, it plays host to fine hotels, brightly-painted villas and beautiful lakeside gardens.
The largest of the lakes – Lake Garda – is the perfect place to indulge in some water sports, relax on the beach or enjoy the local theme parks. It’s well worth branching off from Milan to spend some time touring around this majestic area.
Car hire in Milan is the best way to see more of this lively, ever stylish European destination. It will also give you the freedom to hit the open road and see more of this exquisite corner of Italy.
