The World’s Adventure Capital

Queenstown is a city with something to please every traveller. It’s famous for bungee jumping, home to four ski fields and a popular destination for skydiving, hiking and jet boating. Despite buzzing with adrenaline from adventure sport seeking daredevils,Queenstown is also home to crystal clear lakes, breathtaking mountain ranges and world-class wineries.

Regardless of your interests or the time of year you’re visiting, this delightful South Island destination has more than enough to make for an unforgettable holiday. Hiring a rental car will allow you to explore this region and take in the stunning beauty of its surrounds.

Get to grips with your surroundings

Queenstown is located on the edge of Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Combined, it makes for a beautiful backdrop that can be seen from most locations in Queenstown. For one of the best views of Queenstown head to Bob’s Peak – there you’ll enjoy a view of Coronet Peak, The Remarkables mountain range, Lake Wakatipu and Cecil Peak. Bob’s Peak can be easily reached by the Skyline Gondola, which allows you to sit back and relax as you take in the sights.

The mountain setting provides numerous options for snow seekers, with four commercial snowfields. Grab your gear and head to The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Cardrona Alpine Resort or the Treble Cone Ski Area to sled, ski and snowboard your way to adventure.

Explore a lively little town

Due to its popularity with tourists and backpackers, Queenstown has a buzzing CBD with plentiful bars and restaurants. In peak seasons, it’s not uncommon for the party atmosphere to take hold, with revellers taking to the bars and the streets, enjoying themselves into the early hours of the morning.

If you’re after a laid-back vibe when evening arrives, hop in your rental car and take the short 20 minute drive out to historic Arrowtown. Here you’ll find a pretty little town, with plenty of perfectly preserved buildings from gold rush times. There’s also plenty of cafes, restaurants and intimate country pubs that offer an alternative from an energetic Queenstown evening.

Get out to Gibbston

While Queenstown attracts adrenaline junkies hell-bent on hurtling down mountains and bungee jumping off bridges, there’s also world-class wine to be enjoyed in the region for those who like more relaxed, but nonetheless thrilling experiences.

Queenstown is located near the heart of Gibbston, one of Central Otago's main wine regions, which is home to a beautiful and interesting array of wineries. We recommend nominating a designed driver and taking a tour of some of the wineries in your rental car.

Undoubtedly one the most beautiful wineries in the region is Chard Farm, surrounded by mountains and an immaculate, crystal-clear river. At just a 20 minute drive from Queenstown, making a stop here is a must-do. Just under a 10 minute drive from Chard Farm is Gibbston Valley, which is the area’s oldest commercial winery. The winery is home to a restaurant, a cheesery, and also does tours of New Zealand’s largest wine cave.

Wander a weekend market

If you're visiting Queenstown on a weekend, make sure to jump in your rental car and head for the Remarkables Market. Located just a 10 minute drive from Queenstown in Frankton, the market offers visitors the opportunity to sample some of the region’s best local produce. You’ll find everything from locally roasted coffee, to famous Gibbston cheese.

The Queenstown region is simply stunning, with lots to see, do, and experience. For the best way to see it all, jump in a rental car and hit the road.

Wherever you want to go, you’ll get there in a rental car from Hertz.

A Quick Guide to Queenstown

Queenstown is a small town, famous for its beautiful natural surroundings and energetic nightlife. It’s a world-renowned adventure sports destination, offering a huge variety of activities that attract visitors from all over the globe.

In winter, the town turns into a snow sports paradise as thick blankets of snow cover the surrounding mountains. In summer, after the snow recedes, the town offers all manner of adrenaline sports and activities, from bungee-jumping to paragliding. Aside from the sports, Queenstown is famous for its pristine natural beauty and stunning scenery, so there’s plenty to keep visitors occupied.

Hit the Slopes

If you’re visiting Queenstown in winter, you’ll encounter some of the best snow around. The Remarkables and Coronet Peak are the two closest ski fields. Coronet Peak is the more challenging of the two, featuring world-class runs, with excellent facilities. There’s also night skiing and live music at certain times of the season, which makes for a thoroughly entertaining evening. The Remarkables also offer fantastic skiing, with slopes suitable for all levels of experience.

Go for Gold in Arrowtown

Just over 20 minutes from Queenstown is Arrowtown, a historic gold mining town, picturesquely preserved, with Chinese and European buildings that were once home to immigrants from both communities.

A visit to this picture-perfect postcard town allows visitors to see both sides of the gold rush. The preserved avenue where wealthy banks and merchants traded in the mid-1800s is in direct contrast to the restored huts on the edge of town that illustrate the more modest lifestyles of the gold miners.

Sample Queenstown’s Nightlife

Queenstown has a very boisterous nightlife, perfect for some après-ski fun to let your hair down. Begin with hearty ale at Smith’s Craft Beer House. Here you’ll find a superb selection of craft beer, combined with a North American inspired food menu. If you feel like biting into something a little lighter, head for Taco Medic where you’ll find lovingly prepared Mexican food made fresh. No visit to Queenstown would be complete without a visit to Cowboys. While you’re there, throw on a cowboy hat and try your luck on the bar’s famous mechanical bull.

Fiordland National Park

Fiordland National Park is an absolute must-do for every visitor to the Queenstown region. This is New Zealand’s breathtaking beauty at its most impressive. There’s lots to see in the area, with Te Anau and Milford Sound two of the undisputed highlights. Te Anau

Te Anau is home to New Zealand’s second largest lake and a 12,000 year-old cave system. Visitors can travel through the limestone passages and experience an ancient grotto filled with thousands of glittering glow-worms. It’s a magical experience not to be missed.

Milford Sound

Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most dramatic and beautiful sights, and the country’s only fiord that can be accessed by road. When arriving at Milford Sound, you will be greeted by views of Mitre Peak, a mesmerising and otherworldly experience. This is beauty that needs to be seen to be believed. As the weather changes, so too do the spectacular colours and skies surrounding. Visitors can cruise the entire length of the fiord, which takes approximately 1.5-2 hours to complete. If you only do one thing when visiting the Queenstown region, make it Milford Sound.
