According to its Māori name, ‘Tāmaki Makaurau’, Auckland is “a city with a hundred lovers". This is a direct reference to the city’s enviable location and its proximity to fertile land, as well as numerous waterways. The city was first settled by the Māori people in around 1350.
Auckland is a stunning city that is blessed by its location between two harbours, with volcanic mountains off in the distance and fertile farmland only a stone’s throw from the city. When you climb one of the city’s numerous vantage points, you’ll be surprised just how close the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean come to meeting.
In Auckland the water is never far away. Whether it’s the west coast surf beaches, or the Hauraki Gulf and its plethora of islands, you can escape the city in no time at all.
Just under an hour’s drive from the city's CBD, there is dense rainforest, thermal springs, wineries and wildlife reserves. With all of this right on its doorstep, it’s no wonder Auckland is ranked among the world's most livable cities.
