Cafes, culture and coast in Auckland’s North Shore

Auckland’s North Shore offers all the highlights of the city alongside stunning coastal scenery. Beachside accommodation, cafes, restaurants, designer shopping and the North Shore’s many beaches are all at your fingertips. After arriving from the airport, drive across the iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge and enjoy the splendours of the North Shore.

The Harbour Bridge is a must-see with panoramic views across the ocean; if you have the time, be sure to climb the bridge with a guided tour. Destinations north of the harbour are a thriving haven for cafes, restaurants and bars, with a relaxed beach vibe that has a “kick off your shoes” atmosphere.

Takapuna is a favourite amongst tourists and locals alike. A vivacious beachside town with luxury boutique shopping, there are lip-smacking eateries, and panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto Island. While you’re here, visit Lake Pupuke, a heart-shaped fresh water lake perfect for rowing, sailing or for a visit to the PumpHouse Theatre. Takapuna is abundant with leisurely watersport activities such as paddle boarding and kayaking; walk the ‘lava’ trail along the beach or enjoy the Sunday markets – all in a day’s work.

In Devonport, adventure to Cheltenham Beach and North Head. Grab a bite to eat by Cheltenham Beach (best known for their Fish n’ Chips) and stroll the shorelines for a relaxing day. A bit further south from Cheltenham Beach is North Head, a historical staple outside of Auckland. North Head is one of the oldest of 50 volcanic cones in the Auckland volcanic field; not to mention North Head has extensive records of happenings during WW1 and WW2 with a military tunnel complex, gun emplacements, and various installations.

Rangitoto Island, Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island are all a quick ferry ride away. Rangitoto is a fan favourite to explore in the North Shore, as it’s Auckland’s youngest volcanic cone. It’s an epic destination for a day trip or hiking trip for all fitness levels. See the black lava caves and ascend the summit for picturesque views.

Waiheke Island has car ferries available if you’d like to cruise around the island in your rental car. Waiheke boasts world class vineyards, beach front dining, striking sunsets, diving, snorkelling, bushwalking and more. The island is a paradise in itself – spend a few days exploring the serene ambiance. Likewise, Great Barrier Island is an ideal destination for a getaway. The island is a boating utopia, perfect for all of your outdoor activities like mountain biking, camping, hiking, surfing, and more.

From the Harbour Bridge, drive 30 minutes north to Orewa: the gateway to the Hibiscus Coast. This stretch of shoreline is populated with relaxed beaches and cosy coastal towns. Take a stroll down Orewa Beach or dig your own personal spa pool in the sand at Hot Water Beach. Other worthy excursions include exploring the natural geothermal pools at Waiwera or the walking tracks of the nearby Shakespear Regional Park.

If shopping is more your thing, you’re in luck. Westfield Albany caters to your retail therapy needs with a large array of shops. Albany is only a hop, skip and a jump away (a 20-minute drive) from Auckland’s Harbour bridge.

If you’re short on time, a hire car will help you make the most of your stay in the North Shore. You’ll be perfectly positioned to explore the northern coast with easy drives to any destination.
