According to its Māori name, ‘Tāmaki Makaurau’, Auckland is “a city with a hundred lovers". This is a direct reference to the city’s enviable location and its proximity to fertile land, as well as numerous waterways. The city was first settled by the Māori people in around 1350.
Auckland is a stunning city that is blessed by its location between two harbours, with volcanic mountains off in the distance and fertile farmland only a stone’s throw from the city. The Sky Tower
An Auckland icon, The Sky Tower stands at 328 meters tall and has been a firm fixture of the city’s skyline for 20 years. The tower offers something for all visitors, with everything from adrenaline-fuelled activities, to superb dining and breathtaking views. At the base of the tower is SKYCITY entertainment complex, which is home to two world-class hotels, over 20 bars and restaurants, a 700 seat theatre, and a world-class casino.
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki
Auckland Art Gallery is the largest art institution in New Zealand and boasts a diverse collection, which regularly features local and international art exhibits. The gallery is housed in an impressive building that mixes old and new architecture. And what’s more, admission is free.
Wynyard Quarter and Silo Park
Wynyard Quarter is Auckland’s newest and trendiest waterfront neighbourhood, located in a former industrial port area. After some urban regeneration, the area is now one of the city’s most exciting districts, with waterfront restaurants and bars and weekend markets. Make sure to check it out when you’re in the area.

Auckland’s Hippest Hood
Ponsonby is known as ‘the dining room of Auckland’ because of its plethora of dining hotspots. Head for a wander in Ponsonby and venture down the alleyways which run off the main road. Make sure to explore Ponsonby Central where you’ll find a diverse mix of cafes, restaurants and fresh food shops.
