Welcome to Hokitika Airport - your gateway to the west coast of New Zealand. Just 40km south from Greymouth, this small, laid-back west coast town is abundant in history, culture, natural landmarks, art and more. There’s no shortage of options for every kind of traveller in Hokitika.
Hokitika Town Centre
Escape the daily grind and soak up the sleepy beach town vibes of Hokitika, a hidden gem within New Zealand’s South Island. Sitting along the mouth of the Hokitika River, this once populous town in the late 1800’s from its early gold mining days is now a chilled beachside paradise with just a few thousand locals.
All along the town centre across from the memorial clock tower is where you’ll get a taste of the town’s colonial beginnings, when it was once the Mecca of the gold rush in the 19th century. On a clear day in the heart of Hokitika along its main street, you’ll see the Peak of Cook Mountain in the distance. Stop by the Mountain Jade workshop and meet the artists behind the largest collection of pounamu art and jewellery in the country.
Walk towards Hoki Beach, and you’ll find restaurants, markets and glassblowing at Hokitika Glass Studio. Close to the beach, the Rivell Street Markets is full of stalls selling local produce, gold and pounamu jewellery, baked goods, and more.
On the outskirts of Hokitika is Glow Worm Dell; a popular must-see among visitors. Located to the north of the town in Seaview, enter this fairytale land where glow worms light up all along the river banks.
Popular walking trails
For lovers of the outdoors, there are a number of scenic walks in less than an hour’s drive away. The best way to see as much of Hokitika’s natural beauty as you can, especially for a short stay, is to hire a car and hop between its many popular outdoor attractions.
