Be sure to stop off at the Whakatane Exhibition Centre (Te Kaputu a Te Whanga a Toi) where you can enjoy intriguing art exhibits and stories of the Whakatane area.
One of the most intriguing is the story of Mataatua – “the house that came home”. A traditionally carved Maori ancestral house that travelled the world for more than a hundred years before being returned home to its rightful owners – the Ngāti Awa Māori tribe of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Having regained ownership they now open the doors to all who which to come and experience its rich history. Take the time to participate in the “Know Mataatua Cultural Immersion Experience” which is designed to encourage visitors to “live” traditional culture rather than simply observe it. The experience involves a number of interactive ceremonial rituals and concludes with a sumptuous traditional feast. Sure to be an unforgettable and magical experience for the whole family.
You should also make time for a vist to Moutohorā - the Whale Island, just nine kilometres off the coast from Wakatane. The isolated nature of the island has prevented predators from gaining a foothold here, which means it’s home to a vast array of endangered and rare birds and other native wildlife. Along with many species of sea birds you may also be lucky enough to spot saddleback/tieke, kakariki/ red crowned parakeet, little brown kiwi, bellbirds, tui, and grey warblers all sharing this pristine paradise. You can take a walk to Sulphur Bay where you can have the unique experience of digging your very own hot pool – geothermal hot springs come up through the sand here and a little work with a shovel will see you enjoying your very own spa.
Back on the mainland, there are plenty of nature walks to be had. Take a stroll along the Nga Tapuwae o Toi walkway (Footprints of Toi walkway), guiding you through old Maori fortified villages, native lush forest and seabird colonies. Discover more about the town’s history along the Historic Trail.
With the sun shining, the beach is calling your name. Take a walk from Whakatane to Ohope, where you’ll find pristine 10km long beach to dip your toes into. The Kohi Point walkway will take you through native forest, spectacular cliff top views, to the spectacular Otarawairere Beach.
Whakatane is truly a gateway to a world of wonders, and your hire car will have you visiting them all with ease.
