Fabled nightlife and rich culture has made many visitors leave their heart behind in San Francisco. Visiting historical landmarks like Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz Island or shopping on San Francisco streets or eating at beautiful restaurants are few of the many things that visitors can do in San Francisco.
San Francisco's Historic Cable Cars
Cable cars are a landmark of San Francisco city. Around 9.7 million people travel on these cable cars every year. These historic cars are manually operated, they run using a mechanism that grips cables embedded in San Francisco streets. These cars run on the following three routes:
• Powell and Market streets to San Francisco Mason Street
• Powell and Market streets to Hyde
• California Street to Van Ness Avenue
These cars were started by Andrew Smith Hallidie after he saw a horrible accident where a horse drawn streetcar slid backwards under its heavy load dragging five horses to death. His father was a rope-wire manufacturer, which were used to pull ore from mines. He applied this technology to pull cable cars.
