Dunedin is perfectly positioned in the heart of the south, making it the ideal starting point to exploresome of NewZealand’s inspiring scenery. Jump in the car and make a day trip of it to these nearby locations.

Port Chalmers

Known as an arts and crafts hub, there’s lots to explore in Dunedin’s historic port. From pottery and jewellery to fashion and antiques, you’ll love browsing the galleries and shops in this charming village. Get amongst the wildlife at Orokonui Ecosanctuary, or enjoy the scenery on horseback at Hare Hill Horse Treks. Once you’ve whet your appetite, have a bite at one of the local gastro-pubs.

Mosgiel

Just ‘over the hill’ from Dunedin City, Mosgiel is a charming region in its own right. You might think you’ve wandered into rural England when you see all the green hills and quaint cottages. The sleepy borough of Outram is worth a look while you’re here – try an authentic counter dinner in the Outram Hotel for a taste of times gone by.

Invercargill

Two hours out of Dunedin, Invercargill is New Zealand’s southernmost city. There’s plenty to explore here – if you’re a motoring enthusiast you can take a motorcycle tour of the town and surrounds, or visit the vintage truck museum at Bill Richardson’s Transport World. Foodies will also find plenty to entertain themselves – Blue River Dairy offers cheese-making classes and tastings, or try your hand at being a chocolatier at The Seriously Good Chocolate Company. Invercargill Brewery boasts a cellar door with one of the most extensive collections of brews in the country, along with tours and hands-on cider and beer brewing workshops.

Bluff

Bluff Oysters are the best in the world, so some claim, and certainly the residents of Bluff are keen to extol the virtues of their local seafood. You can make your own judgement on that count, but even if oysters aren’t your favourite there is plenty more to enjoy here. The Maritime Museum is well worth a look, or if you’re brave enough, get up close and personal with the local sharks from the safety of an underwater cage. You’ll need something relaxing after all that adrenaline, so take your pick of the local cafes and restaurants, many with amazing sea views.

With so many day trip possibilities in Dunedin, your only problem will be deciding where to visit first.
