NewZealand is renowned for its natural beauty, and Dunedin’s surrounds are no exception. If you’re wanting to enjoy some truly spectacular vistas while exploring here are some places you should include in your visit:

Moeraki Boulders

Along the Otago coastline you’ll find the amazing Moeraki Boulders. Spanning more than 3-metres across and weighing several tonnes, these ocean-rounded rocks are an astounding example of nature’s diverse beauty. According to Māori legend the boulders are remains of the calabashes, jumaras and eel baskets that washed ashore after the wreck of the legendary canoe Āraiteuru.

Katiki Point

Known not just for its wild natural beauty but also a significant wildlife reserve, Katiki Point is a great spot to include in your itinerary. Seals, yellow-eyed penguins and a wide range of birds and marine life can be found here. The lighthouse, built in 1878 makes the Point picture-perfect.

Otago Central Rail Trail

Closed in the 1990’s, the rail lines that used to span New Zealand have been reclaimed in many areas and restored as recreational areas. One of the best preserved is the Otago Central Rail Trail. Hire a bike or set out on foot along this historic trail.

Mount Aspiring National Park

The third largest national park in New Zealand, there’s plenty to explore in Mount Aspiring National Park. The Lord of the Rings fans will recognise many of the locations for Isengard in this park (there are specialist tours of the locations for true enthusiasts), but movie buff or not the striking beauty of this place can’t be denied.

Waihola Waipori Wetlands

This two thousand hectare wetland is home to more than eighty species of wildlife – including the often-reported but not-yet-photographed Waihola otter. Critters aside there’s plenty of things to do here – the visitor centre will show you the best walking trails to experience the lagoons, shallow pools and islands that make up the wetlands.
