Quite often, a particular shot in a movie makes an indelible impression on one’s mind. Have you ever thought of trying to get into the 70mm to enliven the moments yourself? Blessed with phenomenal natural beauty, New Zealand is dappled with plenty of sites that were chosen for shooting some of the most famous films. Getting car rental in New Zealand is a great way to visit these actual cinematic locations in the country.

Hobbitton-The Fairy-tale Village

The Trilogies of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were beyond any shred of doubt, spectacular movies, thanks to the power packed performances of the cast. But, there is more to it than meets the eye. Yes, lush rolling hills around the town of Matamata. The village of Hobbiton was rebuilt here for the filming of The Hobbit Trilogy, and this remains a permanent attraction today. Spot hobbit holes, gardens, the mill and the Green Dragon Inn and live out all your celluloid fantasies. One can rent a car from Auckland, which is just 2 hours away.

Last Samurai still standing tall in Taranaki

Just like one doesn't need to go to Japan to eat Sushi, in the same fashion, filmmakers recreated Japan in Tarankai for the making of The Last Samurai. You will be delighted to visit the Uruti Valley where much of the movie was shot. Climb a horse and ride away to glory just as Tom Cruise did during the shooting of the movie. It is interesting to note that Uruti Valley was remodelled to paint a realistic picture of late 18th century rural Japan.

Besides being a famous film location, Taranaki is a fantastic place to experience New Zealand’s indigenous Maori art and culture. Other than visiting the studios and workshops of artists that showcase traditional carvings, tattoos, and weaving, visitors can go on tours to explore the tracks of Mount Taranaki that will take them to secret Maori locations.

The Chronicles of Narnia

The Elephant Rocks in North Otago, which became Aslan's camp in The Chronicles of Narnia are, but a geological wonder. These are ancient limestone formations that started forming about 24 million years ago. Fossils abound in the region and you will definitely be able to click some amazing photos here. You can reach Elephant Rocks from the town of Duntroon, west of Oamaru on SH 83, by renting a car.

You can also spot the camp of the White Witch of Narnia in a dark part of the Woodhill Forest which is an hour north-west of Auckland. Adventure-buffs might consider mountain-biking here, since Woodhill is a well-known destination for mountain biking.
