Picton is a beautiful town with plenty to do. Here’s some ideas to get you started.

Queen Charlotte Track

The Queen Charlotte Track is a 70km network of spectacular walking trails. The lack of steep inclines make it an enjoyable experience for people at a variety of fitness levels. You can spend a few days doing the whole thing, or take your pick of half-day or full day walks. The combination of mountains, beach and rainforest makes this an unforgettable experience.

Sounds by Sail

There’s nothing quite like seeing scenery from the water – it is a relaxing and idyllic experience that is sure to please. Choose a skippered or self-chartered yacht (depending on your skill level) and explore the labyrinth of waterways in the Kenepuru Sound and beyond.

E-ko Dolphin and Whale Watching

The Malborough Sounds are world famous for their wildlife, and a boat is the best way to see it. From June to August, whale migrations occur and you might be lucky enough to spot Fin Whales, Blue Whales, Humpback Whales or Right Whales who all frequent the area at this time. All year round there are dolphins to see, along with sea birds and plenty of other wildlife. The team at E-ko run a whole range of tours and they are especially experienced at running educational tours for school kids – so your budding marine biologist is sure to be in good hands here.

Lochmara Lodge

Combining accommodation with a wildlife recovery centre and an arts centre this multifaceted complex is well worth a visit. With an underwater observatory and plenty of other ways to interact with the local flora and fauna the lodge’s commitment to conservation and responsible tourism is evident. They have a bathhouse and massage therapy as well, so you can send the kids off with a guide for a day of wildlife adventures while you enjoy some much needed pampering if you wish.
