Tauranga has some truly beautiful spots to visit, so next time you get the chance you should explore it – here are some ideas to get you started.

Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park

Full of historic mining and kauri logging sites, this is a beautiful preserve with plenty of diversity to explore. Try one of the walks through Karangahake Gorge, which includes exploring old gold mining tunnels. There’s a wide range of terrain to see here, from dense low altitude forest to windblown scrub and grassland. Home to many endangered flora and fauna species, you might be lucky enough to spot a kiwi or kōkako, though a tui or bellbird are far more likely.

Coromandel Forest Park

A wonderful place to get out into nature, there are campsites all along the Kauaeranga River that will astound you with their pristine beauty. Horse riding, swimming, hiking and biking all happen here on a wide network of trails that showcase the unique features of this special place.

Okere Falls

There’s a seven metre high waterfall at Okere Falls that is the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world, so if you’re up for some truly exciting white water action you’ll love this. If you prefer a more sedate option there are some beautiful walking trails with spectacular lookouts to enjoy. With a suitable guide, you can also explore Tutea’s Caves via some stone steps cut into the cliff face in the Victorian era. At the bottom there is a popular trout fishing spot – you can get a licence to try and catch some yourself at the local store.

Omokoroa

This cheerful tourist town is a seaside delight – enjoy the bird trail walk with magnificent Kaimai and Estuary views, wander through the local shops and take a stroll down the beautiful beach. A place with a strong community spirit, you will find this a vibrant place to visit.

Kaiate / Te Rerekawau Falls

Follow the well-formed tracks and enjoy the nine beautiful cascades of these stunning falls. There’s a swimming hole for the warmer months, and misty views of splendour to marvel at when it’s cooler. There’s also a picnic area with amazing views of The Port of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui to enjoy.
