Auckland is many things – vibrant, international, varied. A visit to New Zealand’s biggest city should be savoured. But Auckland is not a city for walkers. One Tree Hill
The crowning glory of green, lush Cornwall Park, One Tree Hill is one of Auckland’s largest volcanoes of all, and an icon of the city skyline. Hike up to the point, or drive up the winding road. You’ll be rewarded with up close views of the towering monument and the grave of Auckland founding father Sir John Logan Campbell.
Mt Eden
Auckland’s highest natural point lies atop Mount Eden, another dormant volcano. Also known as Maungawhau, it is just shy of 200m high and home to a giant, grassed over crater alongside the summit platform. Many a panorama has been taken here, with the unparalleled views reaching out over the city and the harbour.
Bastion Point
Just down the road from Mission Bay, Bastion Point offers sweeping views of the harbour, and is a popular location for wedding photos. You might spot a couple or three posing by the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial obelisk (New Zealand’s first Labour prime minister) and surrounding gardens and pool. There’s also plenty of room to lie back and soak up the rays or toss a ball around.
North Head
Over in Devonport, North Head is best known for its military history, brimming with gun emplacements, fortifications and tunnels as it is. Make an afternoon of it, as there’s plenty to explore.
Piha
The drive out to Auckland’s gritty west coast is an experience in itself. Before descending to Piha beach, pause at the lookout point on the roadside to snap some pictures. Black glittering sands, pounding surf and the unmistakeable profile of Lion Rock make for an unforgettable snapshot.
