Maybe it’s the defining landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Cathedral Notre Dame, but Paris has a certain sense of familiarity. Yet once you’re here, you’ll realise there’s so much more to explore than you ever thought possible.

Gaze down at the city as it spreads out before you from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Indulge in some serious window-shopping on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Sample an array of mouth-watering dishes at your pick of restaurants overlooking the Seine. Paris is filled with experiences that will linger long in the memory.

There are so many ways to spend your time in the captivating French capital, and if you’re hungry for adventure, you can head out of the city to take in some of the many must-see surrounding attractions.

With around 20 Hertz locations in Paris, including at Charles De Gaulle Airport, picking up a hire car is simple. Our vehicle collections have something to suit every traveller – whether you’re here for business or for pleasure.

Driving in and around Paris

Paris view

Like most major cities in Europe, the road and motorway networks around Paris are modern and well-maintained but can get busy at peak times.

There are some local regulations to be aware of as a guest driver in the city, including the need to have high-visibility jackets for each occupant. These must be kept within easy reach inside the vehicle. Don’t worry, our local office will ensure you have everything you need.

Speed limits vary from 50km/h in built-up urban areas to 130km/h on the open highways but are subject to change depending on the weather conditions.

It’s worth checking if your hotel or accommodation offers a concierge service, especially if you’re staying centrally. This hassle-free option means you don’t have to worry about finding a parking space – although Paris has numerous underground car parks – and your car will be waiting for you when you’re ready for your next adventure.

The famous Boulevard Pèriphèrique is the ring road that circles the city. It’s a busy road but it’s the easiest way to navigate your way around the city. Expect to see over 30 junctions leading to different destinations which should inspire you if you’re looking for somewhere different to explore.

Paris is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Head north on the A1 towards the cultural hub of Lille, southeast on the A5 towards Troyes in the Champagne region, or take the A10 and then A11 towards Le Mans, home of the world’s oldest sports car race.

A quick guide to Paris

Notre Dame

Whether you’re a romantic, culture vulture, adventurer or shopping fanatic, you’ll fall in love with Paris. Dive into a city that excels at everything from museums and galleries to cafes and restaurants.

Hunt down the landmarks you’ve always wanted to see in the flesh, browse elegant independent boutiques or treat yourself to the ultimate high-end shopping experience.

Delightful delicacies

Parisian gastronomy is famed the world over, with the city serving up Michelin-starred restaurants, industry-leading chefs and award-winning menus. From pretty patisseries to cosy bistros and buzzing street cafes, you’ll find tempting dishes wherever you go.

Get your fill of delicious fare and consider booking yourself on one of the many food tours so you can eat your way round the highlights of the city’s incredible culinary scene.

You’ll find exotically-flavoured confectionery at Larnicol in the Montmartre district. Specialising in all manner of sweet treats, you can choose from delicate macarons, delectable pastries and intricately sculpted chocolates, all while gazing out at the stunning Sacré Coeur nestled on the highest point in the city.

Discover the districts

Known as arrondissements, each district of Paris has its own unique personality and countless reasons to make you fall even deeper in love with the city.

Be at one with the French capital’s rich history and awesome architecture by wandering the vast halls of the Notre Dame Cathedral in the 4th arrondissement.

Seek out a shopping experience like no other in the fashionable 6th. Here you can browse high-end designer wear in the finest fabrics, pick up antique furniture or invest in some fine art to adorn your home. This trendy district really bolsters Paris’ reputation as one of the chicest cities in the world.

The prestigious 7th arrondissement is perhaps one of the most popular, largely because it’s the home of the Eiffel Tower.

Venture beyond the city

Pack up your rental car and head out on to the open road to see what the local area has to offer. If you can feel the Disney magic calling you then head west on the A4 to see the delights of Disneyland Paris.

Encounter life-size Disney heroes, get your adrenaline pumping on exhilarating rides and don the trademark Mickey ears to truly get into the Disney spirit at this fun resort.

Follow the E5 west to the amazing Palace of Versailles. Take some time for quiet contemplation away from the hustle and bustle of the French capital as you make your way through its beautifully maintained gardens.

Alternatively, a 90-minute drive northwest along the A14 will transport you to French impressionist painter Claude Monet's home and gardens at Giverny. Soak up the tranquil atmosphere of the picturesque landscape, and spot the locations that inspired some of his most famous works.

Car hire in Paris allows you to see more than just the Paris you know from movies and television shows. It gives you the freedom to see everything at your own pace and the flexibility to explore the best of what lies beyond the city limits.
