Napier prides itself on being one of the world’s finest Art Deco cities. It takes this art style and adds a unique Kiwi twist: since the 1931 earthquake that levelled the city, the area was able to rebuild in this historical style with that all-important Kiwi influence. Perhaps visit during February to enjoy Tremains Art Deco Festival: celebrating the architectural heritage of the city, it’s a fun festival that’s important to the history and culture of the city. However, any time of the year is a great way to appreciate the architecture - just have a stroll or drive around.
Pay a visit to the Napier Prison. It’s the oldest prison in New Zealand, which only closed its doors in 1993. With such a vibrant and recent history, the prison is a great way to learn about the criminal history of the country. Keep your wits about you on a prison tour and watch out for the ghosts and ghouls of the area: this place has been known for unexplainable experiences.
Enjoy a Road Trip with Hertz
