Picton Ferry Terminal – The Gateway to New Zealand’s South Island

Make a grand entrance to New Zealand’s South Island. From Wellington, take the ferry to the Picton Ferry Terminal and disembark, ready to explore what the South Island has to offer. Tucked away in Queen Charlotte Sound, the Picton Ferry Terminal seafront welcomes you with open arms.

The terminal is a hub for travel. The country’s principal freeway, State Highway 1, and the Main North railway lines both terminate here. The Main North railway line carries the Coastal Pacific passenger service and freight trains across the South Island, perfect for cross-country travel.

Picton itself is a quaint seaside town boasting funky cafes, galleries and museums. The Picton Heritage and Whaling Museum are both worth exploring; be sure to visit the Edwin Fox Museum built around the remains of an old ship that transported convicts to Australia and immigrants to New Zealand. After learning a bit of history, grab your rental car (located next door) and prepare for your trip throughout the South Island.

Grab a coffee for your pre or post-ferry excursion. Picton Village Bakkerij crafts delicious pies and pastries, Gusto serves up mouth-watering breakfasts and a delightful coffee, and Cortado is another option to satiate your hunger.

Whether you stay the night or spend the day in Picton, explore the Marlborough Sounds (the Queen Charlotte sound where Picton is located is a part of this). Marlborough Sounds are a series of river valleys drowned by the sea following the last Ice Age.

With excellent conditions for sailing and diving, discover the wonders of the sounds and an abundance of marine life in the crystal clear, calm waters. Hop on a mail boat to find untouched coves and access to secluded accommodation, kayak the headlands or hike through the forests next to the sounds. A profusion of activities awaits.

If you’d rather stick to land adventures, uncover the beauty of the 70km-long Queen Charlotte Track; this extensive stretch of trail is open to hikers and cyclists alike to experience the incredible views and atmosphere of this unique landscape.

From Picton, begin your exploration of the South Island by travelling to one of its many nearby places: Nelson is just over a 2-hour drive away, as is Kaikora. Abel Tasman National Park is a 3-hour drive from Picton, and Christchurch is a 6-hour drive. Any of these destinations are a breath-taking first stop on an expedition through the South Island.

If by chance you are on your way to the North Island, the Picton Ferry Terminal is the perfect ride back to the north side. Take the Picton Ferry back to Wellington to explore the culture-packed city – and prepare for a journey within the North Island.
