Just a three-hour drive from Queenstown Downtown is the magnificent Milford Sound. With scenery that inspired many novels, poets, and films, the misty mountains, mirror lakes, and expansive, rugged landscape is something that will stay in your mind long after you’ve left. Once you have driven through the National Park and arrived at Milford Sound, it’s time to witness the jewel in the crown. Described by Rudyard Kipling as the Eighth Wonder of the World, Milford Sound is breathtaking from start to finish.
There are also the towns of Tekapo and Wānaka, just a few hours' drive away. Wānaka is a beautiful, albeit small, ski town, with Lake Wānaka as the focal point. Climb up Roy’s Peak and see the lake and surrounding mountains in all their glory before descending down to see ‘That Wanaka Tree’, a willow tree submerged in Lake Wānaka and a popular photography spot. Lake Tekapo is a glacial lake famed for its beautiful turquoise colouring. You’ll get the best view atop Mount John, and we recommend climbing up to watch sunrise or sunset for some magnificent views.
