A quick guide to London and beyond

Heathrow Airport is a gateway to the whole of the UK, and with your hire care and fantastic motorway links – you can travel far and wide. Take a trip into the centre of London to kick-start your trip, and experience the variety and vibrancy of the city for yourself.

Living it up London-style

Packed with famous landmarks, iconic buildings, lush green parks and of course, Buckingham Palace, London is a destination not to be missed. This fast-paced city is an eclectic mix of traditional Britishness and cutting-edge modernity.

Time a visit to Buckingham Palace so you can marvel at the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Be enthralled by the theatre of this military Company, and see up close the iconic uniforms and stoicism of these famed soldiers. Stroll along the River Thames and marvel at the towering Big Ben and the vast Houses of Parliament, two of the defining features of the London skyline.

If you want to absorb a little more culture, head to the London Transport Museum, the Imperial War Museum or the Tate Modern Gallery – just three of hundreds of historic and cultural sites within the capital.

For shopping, you’ll find flagship stores for many major high-street brands on Oxford Street, or for high-end designer fashion head to Bond Street and Regent Street. Look out for the many markets and independent boutique stores scattered in every district, where you can pick up local products at bargain prices.

Just one more ride…

Take a trip to the outskirts of London for a day of thrill-seeking at a number of top-quality theme parks. There are plenty of rides and attractions to keep even the biggest kids entertained.

Legoland, to the west of London near Windsor, caters for the whole family but is especially great for younger children. From rides and logo displays to science and engineering tutorials, you may well find that one day isn’t quite enough.

Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventure are both traditional theme parks with some very modern rides based on popular TV shows and even some horror films. Chessington World of Adventures offers fun for all the family, with a climbing adventure experience, zoo and splash pools alongside its theme park.

Old stones

Take a day trip out to one of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments, Stonehenge. Less than an hour and a half from Heathrow Airport, and just over two hours from London’s centre, you’ll be standing awestruck in front of the looming stones in no time.

The 5,000-year-old stone circle is a World Heritage Site and for some, is considered a place of worship. Stay until sunset on a clear day and see the mysterious stone formation almost glow in the twilight.

Whether you’re here on business, a family holiday, or a trip of a lifetime, car rental from Heathrow Airport means you can travel conveniently and in comfort to get wherever you want to go.

Driving in and around London

Heathrow Airport is on the doorstep of one of the most iconic cities in the world. Whether you’re London-bound, heading further south to Cornwall, up north to Manchester or exploring quaint towns in the country – a Hertz hire car will make travelling so much simpler.

Heathrow Airport is superbly positioned if you want to head out and take in some of the major sights in the south of England. Travelling from the airport, you’ll find a modern, well-maintained motorway network. Leaving the airport will lead you to the A4 highway, which historically connected London to the west of England and cities of historical beauty such as Bath and Bristol.

The M25 is the major orbital motorway surrounding the Greater London region and is the key to getting out and about.  For a taste of quintessential England, head north towards the M4 which in less than an hour will take you to Oxford.  Take the southern route and you’ll find the M3. Stick with this winding motorway to reach the delights of the South Coast.

Don’t overlook the A roads, like the A4 and A30. When the motorways are busy, these scenic routes can get you to your destination quickly and help you bypass congestion. You’ll travel in anything but a straight line as the road systems are a legacy from centuries gone by, but stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with a picturesque journey to your ultimate destination.

If you’re seeking green fields and countryside vistas up north, the M1 will take you all the way up to Leeds in the county of Yorkshire some 320km away.
