When it’s time for a meal you’ll find plenty of appetising options in Wellington. Here are some of our usual haunts.

Americanos Breakfast Restaurant

Start your day right with a classic American diner experience with a kiwi twist. Everything is made to order on the spot and the serving sizes are generous. The Farmers Breakfast will conquer even the most rapacious appetite, and the crepes are absolutely delicious. Finish off with some waffles or pancakes and you’ll be set for the whole day.

Whitebait

The name might be humble but there’s nothing ordinary about the meals here – their custom built charcoal fired oven creates all manner of sumptuous meals – seafood features strongly, with other local delicacies like venison and organic beef on the menu too. We recommend their set menu – it changes frequently but it is an exciting food odyssey showcasing the chef’s prowess that is sure to impress you. The water views and the beautiful surroundings only add to the occasion.

Crab Shack

Fun, smiles, frivolity, live music and all the crab you can eat feature in this casual coastal themed place. You can buy delicious shellfish “by the scoop”, so try some local mussels and clams while you’re here – and of course crabs and lobsters. For “surf and turf” fans you can include a sirloin steak in your meal as well.

Ortega

You’ll often find this place with a line out the door – a firm favourite of the locals, with delicious food and local wines on offer. They have a private dining room that can accommodate groups up to a dozen people, and their fixed price group dining options are generously proportioned to please the whole family. The lively atmosphere gives Ortega a celebratory air all year round.

Fidel’s Café

The coffee is Cuban and the hospitality is pure Kiwi here, whether it’s the first espresso of the morning, or a rum toddy nightcap you’ll find a warm welcome at this fun themed café. It’s on Cuba Street, of course, and goes all out to bring a little bit of Cuba into the heart of Wellington. There are lots of great vegan options on the menu as well as a wide variety of tasty treats for every palate.
