Welcome to NewZealand’s North Island, known for its volcanic activity, national parks and cosmopolitan cities. It’s also home to around 75% of NewZealand’s population, as well as the country’s largest city, Auckland.

Explore Auckland

Begin by picking up your rental car in Auckland and then set out to explore NewZealand’s most cosmopolitan city.

Auckland is frequently listed amongst the world’s most livable cities – and it’s easy to see why. With a pristine urban environment and unspoilt countryside just outside the city, it’s the perfect place to begin any road trip getaway.

Auckland is the largest Polynesian city in the world, while also being home to an array of other cultures and nationalities. Such varied influences have made their way into New Zealand’s contemporary cuisine – and in Auckland, you’ll find fabulous ethnic food at every turn.

Start by exploring the CBD, making sure to check out the historic High Street and Vulcan Lane. Both streets are renowned for their intimate charm, complete with boutiques, design shops, as well as alfresco cafes and restaurants.

For a different vibe, drive to Ponsonby, a trendy residential neighbourhood packed with Victorian houses and streets that are lined with hipster bars, cafes, and restaurants.

Auckland is also lucky enough to be located beside an array of beautiful beaches. Jump in your rental car and head across the bridge to Takapuna where you’ll find a perfect, white, sandy beach. The area is also home to plenty of cafes, shops and restaurants where you can while away the afternoon.

Take a trip to Tauranga

From Auckland, head south to Tauranga, a stunning coastal city located along the shores of the beautiful Bay of Plenty. It’s a rapidly expanding metropolitan hub, surrounded by gorgeous coastline, offering sailing, fishing, dolphin watching and more.

Downtown Tauranga is home to many historically significant areas, along with a beautiful waterfront that attracts throngs of tourists. Here you can relax and soak up the city’s vibe while enjoying the plethora of cafes, restaurants, pubs on offer.

Take a walk down to the water’s edge and enjoy the gorgeous tidal steps, with views of Tauranga’s harbour. The waters of the Bay of Plenty are also popular with whales, dolphins and seals – so make sure to keep your eyes peeled.

Rest up in Rotorua

From Tauranga, head for Rotorua, where you can experience New Zealand’s iconic natural beauty first hand. Rotorua is a place that fulfils every expectation – and more. This geothermal paradise is an area of enviable beauty, situated on the world-famous Pacific Rim of Fire. With its bubbling mud pools, geysers, natural hot springs and sulphur-infused air, you’ll probably smell it before you see it.

The population of Rotorua is 34% Māori, which gives the region a fascinating cultural dynamic – and it’s one that people never forget.

While you’re in Rotorua, you’ll get the chance to witness traditional Māoril performances that give great insight into times past.

Make sure to head for one of the geothermal parks and enjoy a rejuvenating soak in the natural hot springs. If you’re feeling flash, why not treat yourself to a wellness retreat at one of the region’s countless luxury spas.

Whether you’re an adventure seeker, or a holidaymaker looking to unwind, Rotorua has it all. With crystal-clear streams, magical forests, biking trails and thermal waters, visitors to Rotorua are guaranteed the quintessential New Zealand experience.
