With three national parks and some truly spectacular scenery, Nelson offers visitors an abundance of sights to explore. Here’s some you shouldn’t miss:

Abel Tasman National Park

With golden beaches, dramatic granite cliffs, caves, waterfalls, mountains and valleys to explore you could spend weeks here and still not see it all. There’s a multitude of ways to get around – walking trails, kayaking, an Aqua Taxi, horseback rides and more. For spectacular views, walk along the Wainui Falls track and enjoy the swing bridge at the end, or if you want to hear the bellbirds and see glowworms, take one of the inland tracks to Harwoods Hole.

Nelson Lakes National Park

This alpine paradise is home to extensive beech forests, beautiful streams and lakes and plenty of biking and walking trails to enjoy. In the warmer months, the lakes are available for all manner of watersports, and in winter this becomes a skier’s haven. Rent a chalet any time of year and take in the stunning views and the fresh air.

Kahurangi National Park

One of the largest national parks in New Zealand, this incredible preserve of wilderness is one you shouldn’t miss seeing. There is a large amount of critically endangered fauna and flora here, so all activities are styled with the conservation of these irreplaceable species in mind. Walking trails, rafting and caving are all popular pastimes here, and there’s a bike trail too, so take your pick and enjoy this amazing park.

Mount Richmond Forest Park

With a range of intermediate and challenging treks on offer this is a great place for experienced outdoor fans. There’s a challenging Alpine Route trail or take an easier hike and stay overnight at the huts on Lake Chalice. You can walk or mountain bike up and down Mt Patriarch, or if a longer trek is what you’re looking for, there are three and four day routes along the Pelorus Track. You’ll be rewarded with amazing views and a range of terrain to tackle.
