As is the case with New Zealand’s biggest towns and cities, Christchurch enjoys a prime location near the ocean. You’re never too far from the coast, wherever you are. The area is home to many attractive beaches, bays and surf spots (such as Taylor’s Mistake), from the eastern stretch to Sumner and Redcliffs, and of course, New Brighton. Pick your favourites, jump in a Christchurch Airport Car Rental when you arrive, then head out to sea!

Taylor’s Mistake Beach

Thanks to big waves and tides, Taylor’s Mistake is the number one local surfing spot, hosting a number of events over the year. It’s so named due to a shipmaster mistakenly running in here during the night; it’s also known as Te Onepoto, or short or little beach in Maori.

South Brighton Beach

Picnic facilities, a pier, and calm seas draw visitors to South Brighton Beach. Afterward, take a stroll along Marine Parade or enjoy a round of golf.

Governors Bay

Governors Bay in Lyttelton Harbour is a quiet spot with amazing harbour views. Calm waters and walking tracks make it a peaceful and appealing haven for visitors.

Sumner Beach

One of the highlights of the Sumner region in Christchurch. Walking trails, changing facilities, and plenty of opportunities to swim, surf and sunbathe are all found here.

Highcliffe Beach

With sandy shores safe for swimming and body boarding, Highcliffe Beach makes for a family-friendly day out. Nearby, Highcliffe Castle offers something different, accessible by road or along the cliff.

Leithfield Beach

Residents of North Canterbury area know all about Leithfield Beach, less than an hour’s drive from Christchurch and close to Amberley. Named after settler John Leith, this seaside town is close to top cafes, wineries, and a small pool.

Waikuku Beach

Located on the northern outskirts, Waikuku’s golden beach in Waimakariri pulls in visitors from all over Canterbury, including surfers. Its close proximity to shops makes it a convenient beach for a day’s outing.

Waimairi Beach

Fine, gleaming sand, scenic picnic spots, coastal walks and kiddie playground await you at Wamairi in northern Christchurch. Unsurprisingly, it’s one of the top coastal stretches in the area. Swimming, sunbathing and strolling are all fine ways to pass a day here.
