Head on a Wine Tasting Tour

Gisborne is known for its exceptional wines, with Chardonnay in particular being the town’s flagship varietal. Wine lovers can use their time spent in town to embark on a self-driven tour across the region’s notable wineries. At Matawhero Wines, enjoy a premium tasting at Tairāwhiti’s oldest winery cellar door. Savour the flavours of the region’s renowned Chardonnay, along with Rosé, Pinot Gris, and Merlot. Take a seat outdoors and delight in the rustic charm that Matawhero exudes. Just 15 minutes out of town, take a short drive over to Millton Vineyards and Winery - New Zealand’s first organic and biodynamic wine estate. At Millton, single vineyard varietals are the focus, with Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier wines showcasing the unique characteristics of the Gisborne wine region. If sours and pilsners are more your speed, visit the locally loved Sunshine Brewery for a taste of their famed ‘Gisborne Gold’ Lager, along with a friendly atmosphere. With over 20 beers on tap, there’s something for every palate. Before setting off on your tasting tour, ensure you’ve appointed a designated driver for a safe and memorable journey.

Find Peace Among the Trees

Only a 30-minute drive from Gisborne in the rental car - although you’ll feel another world away - the Eastwoodhill Arboretum is home to over 25,000 species of exotic and native trees, shrubs and climber plants. With a focus on the conservation and protection of threatened and endangered trees, the Arboretum is the perfect place to admire natural beauty and immerse yourself in the environment's magnificence. A haven for green thumbs and nature admirers alike, the botanical collection spans over 16 spaces, with six different walking trails on offer. Visitors can choose from walks between 45 minutes and up to three hours to embark on a journey through the luscious greenery. The Arboretum is the ideal spot to take a romantic wander with a loved one, capture memories for the photo album or stroll in serenity. After you’ve explored the beauty of the forest, tuck into a wholesome meal at the Tasty Leaf Cafe.
