It’s often said that a city can best be explored through its cuisine, and the fun, quirky and arty Christchurch has plenty of fantastic food adventures on offer. Here’s some of our picks.

Retropolitan Social Club

From the funky paisley carpet to the retro-fantastic orange and brown 70s themed décor, this fun hotspot is serving up the past with a unique modern twist. There’s lots of delicious local produce on offer with great vegetarian options galore – but our recommendation is to go all out with their Signature Fondue Platter – there’s a sweet chocolate version too so save some room for dessert.

Retropolitan Social Club is at 359b Lincoln Rd Addington.

Staff Only

Don’t let the closed shutter covered in graffiti, or the “Staff Only” sign put you off, this is a local hot spot that’s sure to please any caffeine lover. The perfect place for a coffee break, you can enjoy some artisanal brews along with bagels and donuts – just the thing to hit the spot and fuel your next adventure!

Staff Only is at 399 Montreal St Christchurch Central.

Sun Dog Diner

If it’s comfort food you’re craving, you will love this diner. Try the “Elvis Burrito” or the “Fight Club” double decker sandwich – or if you’re really hungry there’s plenty of amazing share options from the BBQ grill and smokers out back – the “Beastmaster” pork belly is a house specialty. There’s a great range of Vegan and Vegetarian options here too, and there’s even free refills on all the traditional filter coffee you can handle.

Sun Dog Diner is at the corner of Papauni Rd & Beasly Ave, Merivale.

Uncommon Café

Known for café food that is as “instagrammable” as it is delicious, this hidden gem is the perfect place for a lazy brunch. Focusing on fresh, seasonal local food their menu is constantly changing, so there is always something new (and delicious) to try. Settle in with friends and order some sharing plates – it’s the perfect place to catch your breath and plan your next expedition from.

Uncommon Café is at 262 Tuam St, Christchurch Central

Madame Woo

Bringing the unique flavours of Malaysian Hawker Food to Christchurch, this is the best place in town to get your Asian food fix. Their banquets are legendary for deliciousness and great value, so if you have time, take them up on their lunch or dinner options.

Madam Woo is at 255 St Asaph St, Christchurch Central

Wherever your adventures take you in Christchurch, your tastebuds are sure to be happy.
