Get out and enjoy Wellington and its beautiful surrounds with these easy day trips.

Mount Kaukau

The most visible high point on the Wellington landscape, this impressive peak has a well-formed track leading to the summit lookout. Trek to the top and enjoy awe inspiring views of the city and harbour, Hutt Valley, Porirua, the Tararua Ranges and the South Island. The walk only takes about an hour and the inclines aren’t too punishing, so this is a trek the whole family can enjoy.

Zest Food Tours

If you’re a foodie then a culinary tour is a must-do – the crew at Zest have exclusive behind-the-scenes access to kitchens, producers and culinary workshops around the city. You’ll learn why Wellington is known as the ‘culinary, coffee and café’ capital of New Zealand – there’s rumoured to be more restaurants and cafes per capital here than in New York City. Two words: Om nom.

Kapiti Island Nature Tours

Home to an internationally renowned marine preserve and wildlife sanctuary, Kapiti Island is a place where you can truly experience the New Zealand flora and fauna at its very best. If you’re really keen to immerse yourself, an overnight ‘Kiwi spotting’ tour will give you a rare chance to see this fascinating bird in its natural habitat. Enjoy some glamping on the island in a luxury campsite where everything is set up for you, or stay in a comfortable cabin made of native timbers. Wake up with the birds singing and truly experience this special place.

Wairarapa Wine Tour

A region well known for its wines, the Wairarapa is a must-visit on any Wellington trip. Stop at village craft shops and galleries as you meander through the scenic towns, and get to know some of the local winemakers and their wares. Stock up at the cellar doors and marvel in the entertaining and informative commentary from your expert guide, who will be delighted to introduce you to the wonderful world of Kiwi food and wine.
