When you’re travelling in a new city, one of the most challenging things can be finding a great local eatery that satisfies your stomach and wallet.

Luckily, Wellington is a foodie’s dream, with top notch eateries to suit all budgets. Here are our picks for the capital’s best cheap eats:

Aunty Mena’s Vegetarian Cafe

Vegetarians, vegans and vegetable-appreciating carnivores alike will love this cheap and cheerful Malaysian-inspired eatery in the heart of Cuba Street. Always fresh, always fast and always delicious.

Price range: $12 - $15 for a main
Must try: Dumpling Laksa ($11.50)

Little Penang

Ask any Wellingtonian for their favourite Malaysian food spot and “Little Penang” is the answer you’ll get. This popular spot has developed a following for its authentic and delicious street food. One tip – get in early to beat the dinner rush.

Tommy Millions

Handily located in the heart of Wellington’s night life district, Tommy Millions is great for a post-drink slice of pizza.

Sweet Mother’s Kitchen

A Wellington establishment, Sweet Mother’s is the perfect spot to have a leisurely lunch or laidback dinner. Serving up New Orleans-inspired goodness, you’ll no doubt find yourself coming back here multiple times.

Ekim Burgers

Originally a beachside food truck favourite of locals, Ekim Burgers now has a permanent home at the top of Cuba Street. Get it to go – or nab a spot in the outdoor seating.

Satay Kingdom

Tucked away down an arcade on Cuba St is hidden gem Satay Kingdom. Loved by students and the budget conscious alike, you’ll get a tasty and filling meal here for a few dollars.

Price range: $5 - $14
Must try: Roti Chanai ($7)
