Greymouth Railway Station

Welcome toGreymouth railway station, the terminus of theTranzAlpine line, one of the great train journeys in the world.

The TranzAlpine goes through 16 tunnels and traverses four bridges, including the 75-metre-high Staircase Viaduct, as it winds its way through the Southern Alps on its five-hour journey from Christchurch. There is no better way to arrive in Greymouth for your adventure on the South Island’s West Coast.

Greymouth is a perfect base for a typical New Zealand adventure holiday. It has mountains, rivers, caves and native forests for hiking, rafting, mountain biking and canyoning. It has beaches for swimming and relaxing – and the town itself has galleries, heritage and a famous brewery, Monteith’s.

The galleries of Greymouth are all about the local jade stone, pounamu. This is collected by local artisans from river beds and carved into jewellery and works of art, just as it was for centuries by the Maori. It is a major feature of the Left Bank Art Gallery in Tainui Street.

Head north to explore Paparoa National Park with its majestic and otherworldly geology. There are pancake-like rocks and blowholes at coastal Punakaiki, and the 5km Xanadu cave system or the Fox River Caves. Alternatively, you can camp under the Ballroom Overhang rock shelter and paddle up the Pororari River.

South of Greymouth is the stunning Hokitika Gorge, with the turquoise waters of a glacial river. Or get on your bike and cycle the West Coast Wilderness Trail to Ross along deserted packhorse tracks, tramlines and railways.
